A Fighter For Our Students
Demand accountability, support local control, prepare students for the future, enable good teachers
The product of a broken home, Tom Maynard rose above humble circumstances, growing up at Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch, northwest of Amarillo, and worked his way through Texas Tech University where he earned his degree and teacher certification.
Tom has been actively engaged in education as a parent, teacher, school board trustee and non-profit executive for more than 30 years. For 13 years, Tom worked in career and technical education as an agricultural science teacher and earned national recognition for innovative programs and student achievement. Maynard also served as executive director for the Texas FFA Association for 17 years, which is the nation’s largest state career and technical student organization with an overall membership of more than 118,000 students on more than 1,000 Texas campuses.
Tom is a member of the State Board of Education (SBOE), representing nearly 1.9 million Texans in District 10. As a member of the SBOE, Maynard has served as chair of the Committee on Instruction and is currently Chairman of the Permanent School Fund Corporation Board of Directors and the Committee on School Finance/Permanent School Fund. He also served on the board’s Ad Hoc Committee on the Long-Range Plan for Public Education and the Long-Range Steering Committee.
Tom Maynard is married to Freda, and they have five children and nine grandchildren. They reside in Williamson County. He and Freda operate a real estate appraisal firm and a small purebred livestock operation that leverages reproductive technologies.
PRIORITIES
Our schools are a tool for parents to educate their children with the knowledge and skills to further their education in higher learning and technical schools, succeed in a competitive economy and to be effective, contributing citizens. Respecting parents must remain a centerpiece of our education policy.
As a longtime educator, I often had to make do with less. As a school board member, I often faced the prospect of putting a five-dollar bill where a 10 or 20 dollar bill should have gone. As a member of the State Board of Education I have fought unfunded mandates directed at our schools. I have and will continue to advocate leveraging technology and all other means to achieve new efficiencies and direct more money to the classrooms for our children to succeed.
Woke ideologies have no place in Texas education. Period. I was proud to have supported Texas House Bill 900, which banned pornography in Texas classrooms. I have always and will continue to fight to ensure students are not subject to radical and inappropriate content in Texas classrooms.
The $55 billion Permanent School Fund is an endowment to ensure that our Texas schools have textbooks and educational materials. We must never take unnecessary risks yet maximize our return on investment. We must also protect the fund’s principle from those who would seek to raid it for other purposes.
